CHAPTER 18

Raval didn’t think that he liked being fussed over, but he found that he liked it when Katy fussed over him. Her hands never felt like too much touch, and he enjoyed having her close. They could hear the kids and Lancelot, shouting to each other and barking as they explored the beach below them.

“I don’t think there are any bullets left inside,” he told Katy, because even the shocking revelation of their destination hadn’t eased her worry for him. “I should heal up quickly and be fine.”

“Then what’s worrying you?” Katy pressed. “I mean besides the fact that we’ve apparently traveled back in time.”

“The car,” Raval admitted, now that the kids were all out of earshot. “It’s broken. I don’t think it can take us back.”

“Is that why it brought us here, er, now? There was something wrong with the spell?”

“I don’t think that it was a problem with the spell that did this,” Raval clarified. “But the magic that was required to bring us here burned out big parts of the text. I’m going to have to re-write them, from scratch in a few places.”

Katy blinked at him. “That sounds complicated,” she said with admirable serenity. Raval could feel the self-control that it took—she felt shocky and unsettled and Raval wasn’t used to being the comforting one.

“It will be,” he said, as calmly as he could manage. “And it will take a long time.”

Katy gave a little hiccup of a laugh that was a shadow of her usual chuckle. “Well, apparently time travel is a thing, so we might not even be missed. How…how long? For us, I mean, considering we might end up only a few minutes later than we left?”

Raval thought about the damage he’d seen under the hood, all the smeared lettering and burnt out commands. He wouldn’t want to rush it and make things worse. “A few months,” he guessed. “Give or take.”

Katy let out a shaky breath. “Okay,” she said, though Raval could tell it wasn’t. “Okay,” she repeated more firmly. “We’ll need food, we’ll need shelter. This waterfall should provide clean water, it looks like it comes straight from the mountain top, and the cave can protect us from rain. As places to be stuck in the past go, this probably isn’t awful. There should be fruit here, and fish, and February in prehistory Alaska would be a lot colder and less fun. Let’s assess what tools we’ve got. I’ve got a multi-tool in my purse, and a few snack bars. Do you have a toolbox in the car?”

“I’ve got a toolbox and a survival kit,” Raval volunteered. “With a few MREs and a solar-powered radio and charger.”

“What made you put a survival kit in a vintage car?” Katy asked.

“I live in Alaska,” Raval said sensibly. “You should always be prepared. I mean, I’m a dragon, but you never know who you’ll need to help out.”

Her laugh was more genuine and Raval could feel that the shock was starting to pass.

“You are the very best kind of prince,” she said.
